You probably apply your anti-perspirant every day without a second thought, but do you know how it works? Find out more about the personal hygiene product you’d be lost (and uncomfortable) without.
How Does Anti-perspirant Work?
The ingredients inside an anti-perspirant can or roll on typically contain aluminium salts which, when applied, dissolve into the moisture on the skin’s surface and form a protecting layer. This layer then forms a temporary plug in the duct of the sweat gland and helps prevent sweat from reaching the surface of the skin.
Of course, if you have a shower or go swimming, the plug will wash off hence why it’s important to reapply anti-perspirant. Any contact with water will remove the plug and you’ll be more prone to sweating, however you may find that you freshen up throughout the day anyway, particularly on warmer days.
However, while anti-perspirants can help to reduce sweat, they can’t prevent the body from naturally trying to cool itself completely.
The Active Ingredients in Anti-perspirants
As mentioned earlier, anti-perspirants usually contain aluminium salts; however, there are other ingredients that play a part in helping you be comfortable and clean.
While at Soft and Gentle we produce alcohol free products, alcohol is used in anti-perspirants from other products. Alcohol helps the aluminium salts to dry faster, but if you have dry or sensitive skin, it’s worth using an alcohol-free antiperspirant to avoid irritation or drying it out further.
How to Use Anti-perspirants Effectively
Rather than putting on your clothes immediately after applying anti-perspirant, for best results we recommend waiting a few seconds for it to dry. This ensures that it doesn’t rub off on your clothes and keeps you protected for longer.
We know that no one has time to stand around and wait for their antiperspirant to absorb into the skin before getting dressed, but it does help. However, It might be worth sacrificing a few seconds for you to feel your best all day.
So that’s the secret of anti-perspirant. At Soft and Gentle, we’re here to help you stay as comfortable as you can throughout your day. When you have a spare five, follow us @SoftandGentleUK, or take a look at the blog posts below.
